PURPOSE: The Bengaluru City Police, in collaboration with the Durga Foundation and NLSIU, conducted Active Bystanders Initiative sessions as part of the SAFE CITY TRAINING PROGRAMME. These sessions aimed to sensitize bystanders to intervene in cases of sexual harassment and raise awareness about violence against women in public spaces. The initiative focused on educating the public about smart intervention tools that ensure effective outcomes and enhance safety. Additionally, it aimed to strengthen the relationship between the police and the community by bridging the gap between them, improving the complaint mechanism, and empowering the public to seek help without fear by increasing awareness of the laws.
OUTCOME: The sessions successfully motivated the public to take on the role of Active Bystanders and adopt the “DARE TO CARE” framework:
• D – Distract: Create a distraction to interrupt the situation.
• A – Address: Directly ask the person if they are okay and need assistance.
• R – Rally: Involve others to join and provide support.
• E – Extend Support: Offer further help, such as walking the person home or arranging transportation.
Additionally, the program aimed to gender-sensitize the public, equipping and empowering them with these tools while addressing their concerns to foster a safer and more inclusive environment.
